Barcelona SGA-SEG Student Chapter’s 6th workshop

The Barcelona SGA-SEG Student Chapter’s 6th workshop took place last 30th of November and 2nd of December, and it counted with the assistance of members from three other international Student Chapters: from Morocco, Freiburg and Greece. The topic of this year’s workshop was PGE / PGM in the oceanic paleolithosphere, an interesting topic due to the fact that platinum group minerals (PGMs) are nowadays listed as critical raw materials based on their economic importance and supply risk. Several experienced specialists on the topic gave talks about the geochemistry of PGE, their mineralogy and petrogenesis, the technics used to analyse them, and insights on PGE experimental mineralogy.

The workshop started the 30th of November with an introductory class to PGE, PGM and PGE deposits, at the Faculty of Earth Sciences of the University of Barcelona. The lesson was divided into a theoretical part, given by PhD student and president of the Barcelona SGA-SEG Student Chapter Júlia Farré de Pablo, and a practical part where Dr Cristina Villanova de Benavent, PhD student Lidia Butjosa and Dr Thomas Aiglsperger showed some hand samples from PGE deposits around the world (e.g. Bushveld Complex, Sudbury, Kambalda, Río Santiago). The lesson was very interactive and was considered very positive by the students.

The conferences were held at the Museu Blau building of the Natural History Museum, in Barcelona, the 2nd of December. Six high-quality talks were given by invited speakers from Granada and Madrid (Spain), Freiburg (Germany), Prague (Czech Republic) and Luleå (Sweden). The talks were followed by scientific discussion generated from the questions made by the audience. We would like to give our most sincere thanks to Dr José María González Jiménez, Professor Fernando Gervilla, Dr Rubén Piña, Dr Malte Junge, Dr Thomas Aiglsperger and Dr Anna Vymazalová for their contribution to our event.

The workshop was completed with a fieldtrip to Bou Azzer (Morocco) in collaboration with the Morocco SGA Student Chapter.

Leapfrog Course

The SGA-SEG Barcelona Student Chapter is organising a free course of Leapfrog (a dynamic geological modelling program) that will be given by Clare Baxter in 18, 19, and 20 of December 2017 (http://www.leapfrog3d.com/products & http://www.leapfrog3d.com/academic/teaching).

We have acquired free licences of Leapfrog Geo from AranzGeo-Seequent (https://www.aranzgeo.com). They have given us these licences in order to use it in a scientific and education purposes. Our goal is that these licences will we available to all Earth Sciences Faculty (UB). This software has many appliances in geology such as Geological 3D Models, Hydrocarbon exploration...

Sandra Amores Casals will defend her thesis “Metallogenetic evolution of carbonitic complexes in a hypabissal and plutonic context: Bonga and Monte Verde (Angola)” next Friday 15th of December at 11h in the Aula Magna, in the Faculty of Earth Sciences (UB

We would like to announce that Sandra Amores Casals, one of our first members in the Student Chapter, has finished her doctoral thesis after some years of hard work!

She will defend her thesis “Metallogenetic evolution of carbonitic complexes in a hypabissal and plutonic context: Bonga and Monte Verde (Angola)” (original title: “Evolución metalogenética de complejos carbonatíticos en context hipoabisal y plutónico: Bonga y Monte Verde”) next Friday 15th of December at 11h in the Aula Magna, in the Faculty of Earth Sciences of the University of Barcelona. Her thesis was supervised by one of our advisors, Dr Joan Carles Melgarejo.

  • PGE mobilization and PGM neoformation in the supergene environment”, given by Thomas Aiglsperger(University of Luleå, Sweden)
  • How to make a PGM?”, given by Anna Vymazalová (Czech Geological Survey)

The workshop will be completed with a fieldtrip to BouAzzer (Morocco) from 5th to 10th of December. The fieldtrip will be coordinated with members of the Morocco SGA Student Chapter. The participants will be able to visit the BouAzzer Mine, a full ophiolitic sequence and the chromitites from AïtAhmane.

The workshop and the fieldtrip are sponsored by the Society for Geology Applied to Mineral Deposits (SGA).

There is no inscription fee, but attendants should assume travel and accommodation expenses. However, all participants should fill the inscription form. Places in the introductory course and the field trip are very limited and will be filled in chronological order of application.  This is the link to the form.
